There is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural exchange.

Cultural appropriation is when something is stolen from a culture. For example, Native American clothes, customs, etc. being used by white people. Most Native Americans do not want people outside their group using these customs, so using them is generally appropriation.

Cultural exchange is, simply, the exchange of food, clothes, and music. White people eating sushi? Cultural exchange. POC wearing a tuxedo? Also cultural exchange. White people practicing Buddhism? Cultural exchange. POC eating fish and chips? Cultural exchange. Non-Japanese people wearing a kimono? Cultural exchange. The people in these groups don’t mind people using their ideas (If you ask people in real life instead of on Tumblr, that is). That’s not appropriation.

When you say “white people aren’t allowed to use POC inventions ever”, you’re basically saying “no cultures should interact ever and everyone should be xenophobic”. I don’t know about anyone else, but I have this feeling that practicing isolationism wouldn’t lead to such good results, especially in this day and age.

I still can’t get over the “Jews still had white privilege during the Holocaust thing”. Like, how do you even think that? Even if you define racism as power+prejudice, the Jews were still experiencing racism. Hell of a lot of prejudice, hell of a lot of power the people against them had.

And how do you arrive to the conclusion that anyone during the Holocaust had privilege? It’s like, “Oh gee, we’re all in Auschwitz. We’re all being starved and worked to death and some of us are being experimented on. But you know, since we’re white, we have it so much better than you guys.” NO ONE HAD IT BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE IN FUCKING AUSCHWITZ.

I think the original poster meant that they’re upset that the term “social justice” has gotten the awful connotation of “someone who does things like claim that jews during the holocaust have white privilege and thus you shouldn’t be upset about the holocaust” and that it’s unfortunate that people who are marginalized are being overshadowed by people who do those sorts of things, not that we’ve reached a point in our history where we can exchange ideas more freely via better communication and people who are marginalized have a better platform to express themselves and give visibility to their oppression now..

i kind of feel like the holocaust thing is just in there to easily derail people who try to call the quote out on being bullshit because i dont think anyone would suggest that jews were privileged during the holocaust (i mean white/white-passing jews would have probably had white privilege but i dont know how much that would really matter because goddamn holocaust?)

but yeah equating being upset about cultural appropriation (because white people wearing kimonos= cultural appropriation=racist) and the lack of acknowledgement of intersectionality wrt LGBT issues (because white cis gay men are incredibly privileged) with like, freaking holocaust denial or wtfe is kind of

1. If the white-privilege-during-the-Holocaust thing hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have put it in there. Please learn what the word “derailing” means, because it doesn’t mean what you think it means. It doesn’t mean “any argument I don’t like and don’t wish to address right now”.

Once, when I was eight, I got really sick in the middle of the night and felt like I was going to throw up. So I went to wake my parents up, only my mom, being the worst waker-upper EVER, was less than helpful. When I told her I felt like I was going to throw up, she just muttered, “Go throw up then”. I know that feeling. There’s so much crap that clutters up my fandom/personal blog because I love SVU and femmeslash, which means most of the people I follow are femmeslashers and SVU fans, which means most of them are feminists, which means most of them fell off the slippery slope practically before they set foot on it. For every one good feminist who admits that men have issues, there’s one who reblogs a post supporting “teach men not to rape” because “cultural views of masculinity is one of the main causes of rape”. It sucks that it’s so hard to find someone who loves femmeslash who isn’t also a misandrist.

So every so often, an awesome post comes along that I really want to post over there, but don’t because I don’t want people to get mad at me. But sometimes, I get so mad at all the feminist crap that I’ll make a blatantly controversial post, I.E. saying that men’s rights is just as important as feminism, and breathe a sigh of relief at who unfollows/doesn’t unfollow me. :)

The Tumblr feminist was in a dangerous situation. She was facing severe oppression from some loser neckbeards lounging around on the bus, their legs wide and taking up multiple seats. They were wearing fedoras and My Little Pony t-shirts, they were telling kitchen jokes, and worst of all, one of them started to flirt with her.

The situation was dire indeed. The Tumblr feminist’s oppression had become so severe that she was losing all hope.

But not to worry. She whipped her phone out and came down on them like the Hammer of Thor, taking a picture of their genitals and sending them to a Tumblr page to shame them. There was no point in asking them to move because, you see, they would surely have raped her had she spoken up.

The bus came to her stop and she disembarked, thrilled to finally be getting away from these oppressive bastards. But then she found herself in a much worse situation. A man in a mask and carrying a gun came up to her and growled, “Wallet, now, or I blow your brains out.”

But not to worry. This beautiful site had taught her a defense mechanism to use against oppressive male scum like this.

“No! Don’t rob people.”

The man gasped, “I’m so, so sorry, ma’am. I didn’t realize I had crossed a line. I’ll leave now.” And he did.

But then came one final insult. When she came home, her brother told her that her clothes were a little skimpy.

The Tumblr feminist couldn’t believe it. How could this patriarchal shitlord slutshame her like this?

But not to worry, for Tumblr had given her all the tools she needed to defend herself against oppression like this.

And her brother stopped. “I’m so sorry. You see, as a male, I don’t understand what it’s like to experience anything negative at all, and I completely understand that when you wish all men would die, what you really mean is that you hate the patriarchy and want everyone to be equal. I’m sorry, sissy, can I have a hug?”

“No!” she shouted. “If I want to hug you, I’ll hug you. I have no way of knowing if you’re a rapist or not, so I will treat you like one until I’ve decided.”

“Okay,” he said simply. He was a good feminist now, you see.

And with that, the Tumblr feminist returned to her domain to blog about her struggles as a strong womyn and how her defense mechanisms had helped her so much, how misandry was the perfect solution to misogyny, and how taking pictures of men’s crotches without their consent was okay because some creepy men take pictures of women’s crotches without their consent.

It was still a cruel, misogyny-filled world, but the Tumblr feminist was confident that one day, her glittery “misandry” GIFs and hats would bring about the change she wanted to see in the world. One day, the patriarchy would be utterly smashed.
